Aja Lathan aka AJLUX
pronounced /A.J.Lux/
Once upon a time...
...Aja/AJLUX was relentlessly bullied and even declared the "ugliest loser who needs to die."
Born in San Francisco, CA to two artistic parents, Aja Lathan displayed advanced creativity and skills by age 4 which lead to art exhibits and the sale of her original acrylic paintings by age 12. Raised by incredibly nurturing, encouraging, and attentive parents who also took no BS, Aja was shaped to be an overachiever and very accomplished early. She studied as many other arts as possible including drawing, sculpture, dance, martial arts, and acting throughout elementary and high school. She also wrote lyrics, stories, and drew comics. While attending Occidental College in Los Angeles, CA, she began experimenting with clothing design. Eventually, her friends and members of young Hollywood were wearing her bold and fun creations in the LA club scenes. Years later, while working as a movie production assistant in Santa Rosa, CA, Aja found the inspiration to explore two more mediums: video and digital photography. The alter ego, AJLUX, was born at age 22 and quickly gained attention while Aja continued to experiment with digital arts, painting, fashion, and performance arts.
The Lathan name is all over San Francisco for contributions to arts & culture. Aja's name is on the wall of the MOAD Museum. During their youth, Grandfather Arthur Lathan became the president of the NAACP while Grandmother Dorothy Lathan (who plays guitar and piano) became an outspoken voice for civil rights and a California socialite. Ex-SF Mayor Willie Brown became the family lawyer and friend defending the bad ass Lathans during their battles. (Today he attends Aja’s art shows.) The grands are now avid supporters of the arts and artists and have a huge influence on Aja's fire. Dad Cedric is a musician, audio engineer, photographer, and ex model. Mama Nancy is a jewelry designer, writer, and painter. Miles, her brother, is a badass drummer, producer, and can play almost anything else. All three generations have been invited to events at the White House (until Trump) and are invited to celebrity gatherings from Los Angeles to Morocco as a nod of recognition and praise for their talents and civil activism.
Today, Aja is known in the underground arts, culture, and party scenes of the Bay Area and Los Angeles for her charisma, talents, eccentric wardrobe, and love of dancing. She is also praised for connecting the arts with self-care and therapy and is always encouraging those around her to embrace their creativity. She would heal the world with art if she could... maybe she can since she can't be stopped once she gets going. She is always working on new projects, personal evolution, helping others, and getting paid.
